WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

WHY CHOOSE US?

Just to be clear, we support any producer that is working towards a more local, sustainable and healthy food system, and any consumer that is moving in that same direction. We understand that everyone is at a different place along that spectrum.

Maybe you’re just starting out by choosing organic options whenever you can afford to?

That’s awesome.

Are you making the switch from a large chain grocery store to buying weekly at the farmer’s market? Subscribing to a CSA? Yes?!

Super high-five!

Are you sourcing direct from farmers and purchasing in bulk to save money?

Now we’re talkin’!

What we are offering is the next step on that path. 805 Food Hub producers employ land management and production practices that go beyond organic and sustainable into what we call regenerative agriculture.

Regenerative Agriculture is a newcomer to the world of buzzwords. For our purposes, when we say something is produced in a “regenerative” manner we mean that it adds to and increases the resource base around it - such that by producing it there is more of what is needed to produce it, instead of less.

Regenerative agriculture is the opposite of extractive agriculture - which is basically how the dominant agri-culture has been doing things for the past few generations...and we know that isn’t going very well.

AN EXAMPLE:

conventional chickens

Factory farmed chicken operation

  • Hyper-concentrates animal manures to a point where they are hazardous pollutants

  • Requires tremendous amounts of fossil fuels

  • Relies upon mass-produced, low-quality feedstocks

  • Degrades local and regional water supplies

  • Is unpleasant to be anywhere near

  • Raises birds at stressful densities

  • Produces a nutritionally inferior end product

pastured chickens

A regenerative chicken operation

  • Distributes manure over the landscape with rotational grazing so that it is a valuable nutrient.

  • Reduces the amount of fossil fuels calories embedded in each chicken.

  • Relies upon locally-sourced, high quality feedstocks (i.e. grass, forage, food scraps from local restaurants etc.)

  • Improves water cycling by building healthy soil, which increases infiltration and reduces the effects of drought.

  • Is enjoyable to visit!

  • Raises birds at healthy, low-stress densities.

  • Produces a nutrient dense end product

Regenerative agriculture is a set principles and practices that supports life today while creating a world we are proud to leave with the next generations
